AXOLOTLS ARE NOT A SHORT LIVED PET. ON AVERAGE, AXOLOTLS HAVE A LIFE SPAN OF 10-15 YEARS IN CAPTIVITY. THEY ARE NOT SMALL PETS EITHER. ALTHOUGH YOUR NEW AXOLOTL MAY BE AROUND 2" LONG WHEN YOU BRING THEM HOME, EXPECT THEM TO GROW UP TO 10"-14" IN JUST 6 MONTHS.
HOUSING
AN AXOLOTL REQUIRES A 20 GALLON LONG FISH TANK (30"X12"). HOWEVER WE HIGHLY RECOMMEND A 40 BREEDER FISH TANK (36"X18"). THIS TANK NEEDS TO BE CYCLED LIKE ANY OTHER FISH TANK. SEE OUR "HOW-TO-CYCLE-A-FISH-TANK" CARE SHEET FOR MORE INFORMATION ON HOW TO CYCLE A FISH TANK.
HUSBANDRY
THERE ARE GOING TO BE A COUPLE IMPORTANT FACTS TO UNDERSTAND WHEN GETTING AN AXOLOTL.
FIRST, AXOLOTLS LIKE THEIR WATER IN THE COOL 60°-70° RANGE. TO ACHIEVE THIS, YOU WILL NOT BE ADDING A HEATER TO THE TANK. IF YOU ARE HAVING TROUBLE REACHING THE CORRECT TEMPERATURE RANGE, CONSIDER AN AQUARIUM FAN OR CHILLER TO LOWER THE TEMPERATURE SAFELY.
FOR FILTRATION, THEY LIKE THEIR WATER RATHER STAGNANT.
WE RECOMMEND EITHER A SPONGE FILTER OR A CANISTER FILTER FOR BETTER WATER FLOW.
AXOLOTLS ARE VERY CLUMSY SO STAY AWAY FROM ADDING GRAVEL OR SMALL STONES. INSTEAD USE SAND OR KEEP THE BOTTOM OF THE TANK BARE. THIS WAY THERE IS LESS RISK OF IMPACTION FROM THEM CLUMSILY EATING THE GRAVEL.
AXOLOTLS HAVE VERY POOR EYESIGHT AND USE CLUTTER IN THEIR TANK TO SORT OF "LAND-MARK" THEIR WAY AROUND. WE HAVE WIDE RANGE OF AXOLOTL SAFE DECOR, LIVE, AND FAKE PLANTS TO SPICE UP YOUR AQUARIUM.
FEEDING
AS A ›4 MONTH OLD JUVENILE, AXOLOTLS WILL NEED TO BE OFFERED FOOD DAILY. WE RECOMMEND FROZEN BLOOD DIDERS, REGEST AND WERE COMMEND KEEPING AT LEAST TWO OF THESE FOODS ON HAND!
ONCE YOUR AXOLOTL HAS REACHED ABOUT 5" LONG, WE RECOMMEND FEEDING LIVE RED-WIGGLER-WORMS OR CUT-UP NIGHT-CRAWLERS. FROZEN FOODS CAN STILL BE OFFERED BUT MAY BE A LITTLE INEFFICIENT IN CURING YOUR AXOLOTLS VORACIOUS APPETITE.
AXOLOTLS NEED HELP FINDING THEIR FOOD SO YOU WILL NEED TO HAND FEED THEM WITH TONGS. WE ALSO SELL GLASS AND ACRYLIC AXOLOTL FEEDERS TO MITIGATE THE MESS YOUR PET WILL MAKE DURING FEEDING TIME.
