GUINEA PIGS ARE VERY SOCIAL CREATURES AND GREATLY BENEFIT FROM HAVING IOR MORE SAME SEX CAGE MATE. THE INTERACTION YOU GIVE YOUR GUINEA PIG IS SADLY NOT COMPARABLE TO THAT THEY GET FROM EACH OTHER.
AN ANNUAL VETERINARY CHECKUP IS RECOMMENDED TO CATCH EARLY HEALTH ISSUES, BUT IS NOT REQUIRED.
GUINEA PIGS NEED THEIR NAILS CLIPPED A FEW TIMES A YEAR. THIS CAN BE DONE AT HOME, AT A GROOMER, OR EVEN AT THE VET.
ALL THINGS CONSIDERED, THE AVERAGE LIFE SPAN IS 4-8 YEARS.
FEEDING
THE GENERAL RULE OF THUMB IS 1/8TH CUP OF FOOD PER 2LBS OF YOUR PIGS' WEIGHT.
IN ADDITION TO THEIR PELLETED FOOD, AN UNLIMITED AMOUNT OF TIMOTHY HAY NEEDS TO BE SUPPLIED. GUINEA PIGS ARE GRAZERS AND NEED THIS GRASS TO SNACK ON THROUGHOUT THE DAY.
YOUNG GUINEA PIGS REQUIRE
HIGHER LEVEL OF VITAMIN C THAN OTHER SMALL ANIMALS.
PROVIDING FRESH VEGETABLES
HELPS WITH THIS WATER SHOULD BE REPLENISHED DAILY TO PREVENT IT FROM GOING STALE. A HANGING WATER BOTTLE IS PREFERRED BECAUSE A WATER BOWL RISKS TIPPING OVER AND MAKING A MESS.
HOUSING
GUINEA PIGS NEED LOTS OF ROOM TO RUN AROUND IN THEIR CAGE WHICH IS WHY A DECENT AMOUNT OF SPACE IS REQUIRED.
WE RECOMMEND AT LEAST 6 SQUARE FEET FOR ONE GUINEA PIG AND AN ADDITIONAL 2 SQUARE FEET FOR EACH ADDITIONAL PIG. WE RECOMMEND KEEPING PIGS IN PAIRS.
CLEANING
GUINEA PIGS CAN BE VERY MESSY, SO BE PREPARED TO CLEAN UP SOME MESSES.
SOME SORT OF BEDDING SHOULD BE KEPT ON THE FLOOR OF THE CAGE. WHETHER YOU USE ASPEN, SHREDDED COTTON, OR FLEECE LINING, THE CHOICE IS YOURS. JUST KEEP IN MIND THAT YOU WILL HAVE TO CHANGE THE BEDDING ONCE A WEEK IF NOT MORE.
LIKE CATS, GUINEA PIGS ARE EASILY LITTER TRAINED. YOU WILL FIND THAT YOUR RABBIT NATURALLY CHOSES A SPECIFIC AREA OF THEIR CAGE TO DO THEIR BUSINESS. ADDING A LITTER TRAY TO THAT AREA OF THE CAGE WILL SAVE YOU SOME EXTENSIVE CAGE CLEANING.
TOYS / ENRICHMENT
GUINEA PIGS ARE RODENTS AND HAVE FOREVER GROWING TEETH. BECAUSE OF THIS, THEY ALWAYS NEED SOMETHING TO HELP DULL THEIR TEETH DOWN. WE HAVE PLENTY OF TOYS IN STORE THAT WILL KEEP YOU PIGS OCCUPIED WHILE YOU ARE AWAY.
GUINEA PIGS HAVE WEAK BACKS AND CANNOT RUN IN A BALL OR WHEEL!
FUN FACTS
GUINEA PIGS ARE BORN WITH ALL THEIR HAIR AND TEETH. JUST HOURS AFTER BIRTH, BABY GUINEA PIGS ARE ALREADY RUNNING AROUND AND PLAYING!
HAIRLESS GUINEA PIGS PERFECTLY COMPATIBLE WITH THEIR FURRY COUNTER PARTS AND HAVE THE SAME CARE! THE ONLY DIFFERENCE IS THAT THEY REQUIRE AN ORGANIC COCONUT OIL RUB DOWN A FEW TIMES A MONTH TO REDUCE DRY SKIN!
